How do Crypto Giveaways Work?
Crypto giveaways typically work by offering participants the chance to receive free cryptocurrency tokens, coins or NFTs through various promotional activities. These activities can be opening an account with a crypto exchange, depositing a certain amount, trading a certain amount on the spot market or the futures market, staking select coins and more. Completing the activities gives you entry into the giveaway.
Once you complete the task, typically there is a draw where all participants share from a prize pool. Sometimes, this is merit-based – for example, whether you reached a top ten position in the task – sometimes it’s random, or sometimes all participants earn a reward.
It’s rare to find free crypto giveaways in the sense that you don’t have to do anything. Those that are free giveaways, typically have a minimal reward or incentivize you to start completing tasks or referring friends to increase the rewards. It’s important to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of giveaways to avoid potential scams or fraudulent activities, which are growing rampant as crypto adoption increases.
How to Enter a Crypto Giveaway
Entering a crypto giveaway is straightforward. We’ll take a look at how to participate in Binance’s Red Packet Giveaway as it doesn’t have any requirements aside from opening an account. Participating in other crypto giveaways may differ depending on the task required.
Step 1: Open a Binance Account
Visit Binance and open an account by clicking “Register” at the top of the navigation menu. Select “Sign Up With Email or Phone” and fill out the form.
You may be required to complete a KYC verification, so ensure you have a valid ID document near you.
Step 2: Claim your Red Packet Reward
Visit the Binance Pay section (under “More” in the navigation menu) and select the Red Packet option. Press the “Claim” button.
You can earn up to $3 USDT with one packet. Earn more packets by inviting friends and family.
Crypto Giveaway Scams
Unfortunately, crypto giveaway scams are everywhere in the cryptocurrency space. You’ll find them as ads on social media, especially Twitter, in your email, and definitely on Discord if you’re active in any crypto-related channels.
These scams target individuals who want to get free cryptocurrencies or NFT drops, exploiting the desire for quick profits, especially after a recent cryptocurrency has skyrocketed. There are several types of crypto scams, including:
- Impersonation. Impersonating well-known individuals or projects, such as prominent cryptocurrency influencers or reputable blockchain platforms to give credibility to the scam. You’ll notice it by using a misspelled name or using a weird website name, for example, “jlto” instead of “jito”.
- Fake project. Fake projects often claim to give you free NFT or token airdrop. All you have to do is visit the website – typically advertised on Twitter – connect your wallet and sign a transaction. Instead of receiving your airdrop, you will find your wallet drained. Because of that, it’s important to have a burner wallet that you use to connect to shady sites and keep your real assets in a separate wallet. If the drop is legit and you can sell it, great, move the reward you earned to another wallet. But if it’s a fake website that drains your wallet, you won’t lose much.
- Hacks. This has happened many times and it’s likely to happen again. For example, Vitalik Buterin’s Twitter account got hacked and the hacker shared a malicious link that drained close to $700,000 from the victims. Similar things have happened with the Ledger hack where a former Ledger employee had their account hacked and the hackers managed to enter a malicious code on Connect Kit, which is used to connect the hardware wallet to DeFi apps.
It’s crucial that you remain vigilant and never share your wallet seed phrase with anyone, which sometimes could be a “requirement” from these fake and scam crypto giveaways.
Recent Biggest Crypto Giveaway Scam
Elon Musk is no doubt one of the most influential people on crypto Twitter. His tweets can move markets as we’ve seen Dogecoin move 4% after Musk tweeted about it. Because of that, many crypto giveaway scams try to leverage his name and his companies to scam unsuspecting victims.
One version of such a scam is a fake SpaceX YouTube video stream where Elon Musk talks with someone or holds a speech and on the screen there’s a QR code that says you will earn two BTC or ETH back if you send one on the provided address. Of course, you won’t get anything back if you send your coins.
Similar videos ran in the past with Elon Mush and Cathie Wood where they talk about Tesla in a completely legit video overlaid with a scam QR code. Don’t fall for it, no one will give you a full Bitcoin or Ethereum coin for nothing.
Another Elon crypto giveaway scam is a SpaceX token presale. There is no such thing as a legitimate SpaceX crypto token as of this writing. These tokens are scams. If you buy the fake tokens in a presale, you can only hope that at some point you can sell them and recover some of your investment.
How to Tell If a Crypto Giveaway is a Scam?
The easiest way to tell if a crypto giveaway is a scam is to use the old “if it’s too good to be true it probably is”. No one will give you free money in crypto for nothing. Even people who got massive token airdrops like the recent JITO airdrop on Solana where some users got over $20,000 worth of tokens, didn’t get them for free – they earned their way there for the past couple of years by using the Jito protocol and staking their SOL coins there.
The second warning sign is a typo. If the project or the token name is misspelled, it’s almost guaranteed that it’s a scam. Typically they will use popular names from the crypto industry, whether it be influencers or projects to pass as legitimate.
Finally, no legitimate project will ask you to send cryptocurrencies to get more cryptocurrencies in return. If you see a YouTube livestream with Elon Musk or popular crypto influencers where they ask you to send one Bitcoin to get two back, run. Or better yet – report the channel to YouTube.
What to do if You Spot a Crypto Giveaway Scam
This largely depends on what kind of crypto giveaway scam it is. If it’s a video stream, simply close the video and you’re safe. If the scam requires of you to visit a website, connect your wallet and sign a transaction, there’s only one thing you could do – use a burner wallet.
Keep your assets in separate wallets. And never connect to any site, especially if you’re not familiar with it. Burner wallets are hot wallets with just enough funds in them to cover the transaction costs. If you sign a transaction at a scam website, they won’t have anything to steal from you. But if you sign a transaction where you hold your assets, you can lose everything within seconds.
Crypto Giveaways Rating Methodology
We compared multiple crypto giveaways to find the best. Here’s how we evaluated each giveaway:
- Project legitimacy. All of our crypto giveaways are from large well-established crypto exchanges. This instantly passes the scam filter.
- Value. Our next evaluation metric was the value you get from the giveaways. Of course, crypto exchanges offer constant giveaways and the value could differ. But overall, you know how much you can earn when you participate in the giveaway.
- How easy it is to earn. Some giveaways require either high trading volume or provide unreasonable expectations that you earn a top three spot in a trading competition. The giveaways we covered are typically easy to get and require that you open an account and often stake a certain cryptocurrency to earn the reward.
- Transparency. Another criterion we employed was transparency. This means you know what’s expected of you and how much you can earn in the giveaway, without hidden costs and requirements.
Crypto Giveaways: Bottom Line
As the cryptocurrency ecosystem continues to evolve, the best crypto giveaways serve as a quick reward but also as a community-building tool and for your education, especially if trading crypto is a requirement to earn a specific giveaway reward.
However, make sure to do your due diligence and be aware of scams. If the reward is too good to be true, it probably is.
