Ghana’s Postal Service Launches Inaugural Crypto Stamp to Mark Monarch’s Coronation – BitKE

The Ghanaian postal service recently introduced what is being hailed as the inaugural crypto stamp, marking the 25th anniversary of the coronation of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as the Asantehene.

The Asantehene is the title for the monarch of the historical Ashanti Empire as well as the ceremonial ruler of the Ashanti people today. The position is a highly regarded leadership position in the West African position.

The crypto stamp, reportedly traded as a non-fungible token (NFT) on crypto markets, bears the images of the Asantehene, who rose to the throne on April 26, 1999.

Bice Osei Kuffour, the Managing Director of Ghana Post Company Ltd, emphasized that the introduction of the digital stamp contributes to the preservation of the Asantehene’s rich heritage.

“Today, as we unveil the commemorative stamps dedicated to His Majesty’s reign, we affirm our commitment to innovation and excellence in preserving our nation’s stories and delivering them to the world,” said Kuffour while adding that the crypto stamps will serve as a bridge, connecting Ghana’s older and younger generations.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, praised the Ghana Post Company for launching the commemorative stamps.

“This commemorative stamp, is therefore, a reflection of our national pride and identity, and serves as a reminder of the inextricable link between our traditional values and our wild anticipations, reminding us that our rich cultural heritage is the foundation on which our nation’s future is built,” she said.

As per a report in Graphic Online, Ghana Post Company has introduced four additional stamp varieties alongside the crypto stamps. These stamps serve a two-fold purpose:

• Preserving the legacy of the Ghanaian royal family, and
• Enhancing the global promotion of the West African nation

Recall that Ghanaian Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, recently announced plans for the country to implement blockchain technology across its governmental operations. This initiative seeks to establish Ghana as the inaugural blockchain-powered government in Africa.

According to Bawumia, the innovative and automated features of blockchain could enable Ghana, as well as Africa as a whole, to recoup billions of dollars lost to corruption, poor governance, mismanagement, and a lack of accountability.
