Port of Cork could see influx of students as almost 200 bedsits planned

Plans have been submitted to Cork county council for a new development of 194 student bedsits by the Port of Cork to cater to students who attend the National Maritime College of Ireland and other institutions in Ringaskiddy.

The proposed building would be 2-3 storey halls of residence containing student bedsits in an “open parkland landscape.”

The student halls would be built on the site of a BnB called Rode Lodge in Loughbeg, which had a distinctive bright pink exterior.

The Port of Cork has a partnership with the Martime college which offers courses specifically aimed at students who want to work in the port sector.

The college is the first third level institute in the country to be built under the goverment’s Public-Private partnership scheme, which involves a partnership between CIT, and the Irish Naval service.

The new student halls would house students attending the college to become professional seafarers. Many experienced professionals also attend the college to acquire further qualifications.

Cork county council’s preliminary decision on the plans is due by the 17th of May.
