The Royal Australian Mint has taken the opportunity with the release of their 2021-dated Christmas commemorative coin to remind those of us who are residing in the Northern Hemisphere that Christmas Down Under has many different traditions involving sun and sand.
As such, the 12-sided 2021-dated 50-cent Christmas-themed coin designed by Bronwyn Scott is bursting with summer sun and surf. Blending elements of dot style art with a modern rendition of the shore and waves, the design wholly captures Australia’s love for Christmas outdoor activities such as surfing and beach life. The shimmering surface of the saltwater is shown glistening with stars and sparkles as it cascades into billows of seafoam. Below, the garland of bubbles shows the tidal mark on the textured sand depicted with a dotted design and a subtle play of frosted finishes. The numeral 50 is placed to the lower-right, denoting the coins’ value of 50 cents.
The obverse depicts the Commonwealth effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II created by graphic artist Jody Clark. The year of issue 2021 is included in the legend surrounding the effigy.

Housed in a coin-card format, each coin is stylishly presented in the mint’s clever and unique pop-out decoration card in five foiled colours of yellow, blue, purple, turquoise, and white, which enables the coin itself to be used as a Christmas tree ornament. There is also space to write a personal holiday message, which is located on the reverse side of the card. For more information, please visit the website of the Royal Australian Mint.
