Authorities ID Solana Beach bicyclist fatally struck by motorcyclist during Carlsbad pursuit

Authorities this week identified the bicyclist killed last week when he was struck by a motorcyclist who was fleeing from a California State Parks officer in Carlsbad.

Solana Beach resident Brad Allen Catcott, 68, was riding his bicycle Aug. 15 along Carlsbad Boulevard, close to Carlsbad State Beach, when the fleeing motorcycle rider struck and fatally injured him, according to police and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Catcott was riding from the bicycle lane to a turning lane when he was struck, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. He died at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries.

A spokesperson for the Medical Examiner’s Office identified Catcott on Tuesday, Aug. 23, the same day Carlsbad declared a state of emergency in connection with a sharp increase in crashes involving bicycles and e-bikes over the past two years. Catcott was killed eight days after a driver struck and killed Christine Embree, a 35-year-old mother who was riding an e-bike with her 16-month-old daughter, who was not seriously injured in the crash.

According to Carlsbad police, a California State Parks officer began chasing a motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man, who the officer believed was speeding and driving recklessly. The motorcyclist, riding with a 22-year-old woman, was heading north on Carlsbad Boulevard when he struck Catcott around 1 p.m.

Paramedics took the rider and his passenger to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, Carlsbad police said last week. Authorities have not identified the motorcyclist.

On Tuesday, Aug. 23, a Carlsbad police spokesperson referred questions about the crash and investigation to State Parks officials.

A State Parks spokesperson provided a statement Thursday, Aug. 25, that said there “is no new information to share with the public” about the crash that killed Catcott or potential charges against the motorcycle rider.

“The investigation into the collision is ongoing,” the statement said. “The Carlsbad Police, California State Parks and San Diego County District Attorney’s Office are working together on the investigation.”
