A Shiba Inu named Charlie has gone viral after he got ahold of a girl’s homework and wouldn’t give it back as he was chased around the house.
The viral TikTok, captioned, “#shibainu #dogsofttiktok #dogatemyhomework #fyp,” has been viewed 318,700 times and liked 75,900 times since it was shared on April 4.
According to the American Kennel Club, Shiba Inu dogs have a life expectancy of between 13 and 16 years, and are known for being alert, active and attentive. They are an “ancient Japanese breed” of dog, and are popular in Japan. They were brought to the United States from their homeland, and are bold and confident in personality.
The 23-second clip, posted by TikToker @tongrove, or Tonya Lapp Grove, was accompanied by the song “Little Bitty Pretty One” by Thurston Harris. The video started with Charlie trying to get away from a girl named Maddie, who was chasing him to get her homework back.
Charlie had the homework paper in his mouth, and darted past the couch and around to the chair on the other side of the room as Maddie tried to reach out and grab the paper, to no avail.
“I had to email her teacher because the dog ate her homework,” the screen read in text overlay.
Charlie stopped to look back with the homework still in his mouth. He then took the opportunity to chew and play with the paper, but suddenly Maddie was chasing after him again, who ran behind the couch and then towards the chair, going in circles.
He made the trek around the room again, and Maddie tried to grab the dog and the homework, missing and falling.
“At least we had video evidence,” the screen read.

The dog came out from behind the chair, chewing on the paper as Maddie got up and lunged in his direction, grabbing the paper when the dog got out of the way. However, it looked like Charlie ripped a corner off the paper before it was all over.
In a follow-up video, the TikToker shared a clip of Charlie sitting on the ground as she went into more detail about the homework fiasco, which occurred a few years prior. She revealed Maddie got most of the homework away from Charlie, and turned it in.
“Although I did email her teacher to let her know what to expect because the homework was pretty battered at that point,” the TikToker said. “And I did send the video along as well. She got a big kick out of it. And in the end, all was well.”
More than 800 comments came in over Charlie the Shiba Inu’s antics, and apparently, he isn’t the only dog who has eaten homework before. “Lol, my dog actually ate my homework when I was in high school!” a TikToker revealed. “I was like how am I going to explain this?”
Another viewer claimed the same thing happened to their son. “We taped all the remaining pieces back together on another sheet of paper and wrote the teacher a note,” they added. “The teacher laughed.”
One viewer claiming to be a teacher told the creator of the video to “please attach this video to the email! It’s also why I don’t take work home…My dogs would eat their assignments!”
Another TikToker figured there’s a reason for the phrase, “My dog ate my homework.” They said, “The phrase had to come from somewhere, right?”
Some questioned the legitimacy of a dog eating homework. “Omg, this is a real thing?” a viewer asked. “It’s always been a myth for me growing up.”
A viewer saw the bright side, thinking it’s a “good thing mom has a video showing dogs do eat homework.”
However, one TikToker said that Shiba Inus “love paper,” adding, “at least both of mine do. They will steal mail right off the counter.”
Other comments of appreciation included things like, “That’s awesome,” “At least you got video proof,” and “Love it.”
Newsweek reached out to TikToker @tongrove for comment.
This isn’t the only dog to go viral lately. A canine’s response to hearing the word “cows” has delighted the internet with his authentic reaction. Another dog went viral for her reaction to a toddler coming home. In addition, a canine has caught viewers’ attention with his reaction to a torn-up cushion.
