‘Elden Ring’ Receives Improvements, Optimizations For Valve’s Steam Deck

“Elden Ring” became the hottest talk of the town after its prestigious launch last month. For “Souls” fans who already played other FromSoftware adventure games, they considered this new game as a modern take for the highly-respected brand of video games.

Apparently, a few weeks after it came out, some players complained of various issues in playing it. Many of them came from PC players on Steam, and this is now up to Valve how it will address the problems in “Elden Ring.”

This week, a new report showed that Valve has already fixed “Elden Ring” issues in Steam Deck. This was confirmed by a Valve coder through a tweet.

Stuttering Issue in ‘Elden Ring’

According to a report from Kotaku, one of the most common issues that “Elden Ring” gamers encountered since its release was the annoying “stuttering” problem. If you search on the web, you will see a long list of games that are experiencing the same issue.

The gaming publication also included that Valve coder Pierre-Loup Griffais had posted a short clip on Twitter regarding some improvements for the “Elden Ring” Steam Deck version.

In an interview with another game-centered site, Eurogamer, Griffais said that they already addressed the shader pre-caching system in the Steam Deck console.

Compared to its Linux/Proton counterpart, Valve managed to come up with merging the GPU and the driver in the process. To add, the gaming platform also added many shaders that are within the game infrastructure.

Shader Compiling is Not the Main Issue

The game locally runs through the graphics API. Usually, these were being skipped. Interestingly, Valve discovered that the main problem does not revolve around shader compiling.

Graffais clarified the issue through this statement.

“Shader pipeline-driven stutter isn’t the majority of the big hitches we’ve seen in that game. The recent example we’ve highlighted has more to do with the game creating many thousand resources such as command buffers at certain spots, which was making our memory manager go into overdrive trying to handle it.”

He added that the “aggressive” caching of the allocations has helped them address the known “Elden Ring” issue. Regarding the problems of the game on other platforms, Graffais said that he could not give any comment about them.

‘Elden Ring’ NPC Exploit

For the latest report, Tech Times wrote that you can now deceive another “Elden Ring” player by pretending to be an NPC on the watch. Last week, we discovered that you can actually escape from an invader effectively through this trick.

In the video, u/xdc acted like an NPC by going back-and-forth to the same location multiple times. It’s hilarious to see the confused invader who is wondering about the whereabouts of the joker.

Just a few weeks after its official launch, “Elden Ring” has already established a huge name in the industry after it became the 2022’s best-selling game in the United States.
