A Scarborough bed and breakfast was named best in the world for the second time in a row.

The Toulson Court Bed and Breakfast, near Scarborough’s Peasholm Park and a short walk from Scarborough Beach, was named the best-rated B&B in the world for the second consecutive year in the 20th annual Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards for Hotels.

The seaside B&B is owned by couple James and Angela Rusden who said they were shocked to have been awarded the title for the second time in a row. They boil their success down to their friendly approach and hospitality.

James said: “It is absolutely amazing, we are just an ordinary B&B that costs £75 a night. We are a good value for money and it is amazing that we get to compete with other B&Bs in the world that cost £200.

“We are just an 8-bedroom B&B in Scarborough, no one would think we’d be the best in the world. Our key to a good business is the friendly service, my wife Angela and I go out of our way for our guests.

“We never expected it the first time, so to win it again for another year is wonderful.”

The 2022 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards are based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over the 12-month period from 1 January, 2021 through 31 December, 2021. The Toulson Court was named the best across six continents and 90 countries.

James added they opened the B&B nearly six years ago in June 2016, so the fact that they’ve been named the best twice already was amazing. “Last year, we opened up before some other places had due to Covid, so we thought maybe that was why we had won, for it to happen again is truly fantastic,” he said.

In addition to The Toulson Court in Scarborough, notable UK B&B winners include, The 25 Boutique B&B in Torquay which places second in the UK and Europe and fifth in the world and Coombe House in Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds, ranking third in the UK and Europe and seventh in the world.
