Liberland: the world’s first Decentralized Autonomous Government?

El-Salvador is known to be the first nation to legalize any crypto – in particular bitcoin – as legal tender. After El-Salvador, the Central African Republic also made Bitcoin a legal tender. However, Liberland proves to have gone unnoticed on the crypto and blockchain adoption radar.

Vit Jedlicka, the founder, and president of Liberland, said to the audience at the Bitcoin 2023 Miami event that his nation, Linberland, was into Bitcoin before El-Savador realized the cryptocurrency. He added that since 2015, the country has been involved in Bitcoin, with 99.9% of its reserve in Bitcoin. Liberland is also being developed as the first Decentralized Autonomous Government as well as the freest country on earth.

Liberland is a self-declared micronation located on a disputed 7-square-kilometer (2.7 sq mi) piece of land on the west bank of the Danube River, between Croatia and Serbia. It was proclaimed on April 13, 2015, by the Czech right-libertarian politician and activist Vít Jedlička.

The disputed land is a strip of land that was created as a result of a border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. The dispute arose after the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991. The land was originally part of Croatia, but Serbia claimed it as their own. The dispute has never been resolved, and the land remains unclaimed territory.

Vit based his claim on the fact that the land is unclaimed by any other country. He also argued that Liberland is a natural extension of the Czech Republic, as it is located directly across the Danube River from the Czech town of Břeclav.

Liberland spreading across the world

Vit said that after trying to make the Czech Republic a better place for people to live freely, he decided to focus his attention on Liberland. “I realize it might be much easier to actually start a new country than to fix an existing one, and we found a pretty nice plot of land.” Liberland, which was claimed by Vit, his wife, and other friends, is developing itself using the Montevideo criteria for statehood while bringing innovation into that system with the help of Bitcoin.

“We have to be honest with ourselves; there has been no major innovation in the way countries are governed, and that’s why we decided we also needed to innovate,” the President added. Apart from developing a constitution for the state in the last seven years, Liberland has been developing closer ties with several nations around the world.

With 700,000 people who have signed up for citizenship in Liberland, the young nation has over 23 diaspora villages alongside representative offices around the world. Vit noted that Liberland has representation in the EU parliament as well as the US Congress, while it has been partially recognized as a nation by the Dominican Republic.

Architectural representation in the metaverse

In line with the physical development of the region, the President revealed that they are working with a group of architects to design Liberland using a liberal vision, which is being replicated in the metaverse. 

“We’re having all of that in a metaverse so you can already run through that even before it gets built.”
