Plateau State government partners with Algorand to explore NFTs and other blockchain use cases

The government of Plateau State, Nigeria has partnered with a non-profit organisation, Algorand Foundation to foster innovation and explore real-life use cases for blockchain in the space. 

According to a statement sent to Technext, this partnership with Algorand would improve efficiency, transparency and economic opportunity for Plateau State residents. The pilot programs will span multiple sectors.

Additionally, the Algorand Foundation will be supporting an upcoming Incredible Music Festival, where they will teach an NFT workshop to show creatives how to turn their work into NFTs and sell them on Web3 marketplaces.

Plateau State is the twelfth largest state of Nigeria and is roughly located at the heart of the country. It has a population of around 4.2 million people and has the most clement weather in Nigeria with temperatures going as low as 10 degrees Centigrade.

The Algorand Foundation, dedicated to helping fulfill the promise of the Algorand blockchain, has invested significantly in Nigeria through software developer education across the country since 2021. The foundation reportedly trained over 500 software developers in 2023 alone in which more than 10% were from Plateau State.

The Government of Plateau State is basically launching this collaboration to develop pilot programs using blockchain technology. Working with the Algorand Foundation, the Government of Plateau State plans to test blockchain applications across multiple sectors. 

In addition to the collaboration, the Algorand Foundation will be sponsoring the Incredible Music Festival (IMF), an event taking place from February 22-24, 2024 in Jos, Plateau State. 

Also, the Foundation is organising a workshop with Algogems, an NFT marketplace, during the IMF to introduce creatives to Web3 and onboard them to the digital economy. 

Comments from stakeholders 

According to Engr. Datong Dominic Gwaman, the Director General of Plateau State Information and Communications Technology Development Agency (PITCDA), Nigeria has the leading digital economy sector in Africa and the National Blockchain Policy was a groundbreaking first step towards blockchain adoption in the country.

Adding that:

“We look forward to collaborating with Algorand Foundation on real-world use cases that bring greater efficiency, transparency and access to public services, while creating new job opportunities.”
