The New York Times Wins Five Emmy Awards Across Opinion and News Reporting

The New York Times won five News and Documentary Emmys at the 44th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards this week.

Opinion took home a total of three awards. “I Stutter” won Outstanding Soft Feature Story: Short Form. The video follows John Hendrickson, who has stuttered nearly his entire life. Mr. Hendrickson, working with the filmmaker James Robinson, explores the obstacles and emotional burden of his condition and explains the coping strategies and workarounds he has devised to make it through the day in a world that demands that we speak up and speak clearly.

“My Disability Roadmap” from Op-Docs won Outstanding Soft Feature Story: Long Form. The father-son filmmaking team Dan and Samuel Habib document the path to adulthood for Samuel, who lives with a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a mutation in a gene known as GNAO1. Samuel seeks out guidance from America’s most rebellious disability activists in his journey to learn how they built full adult lives — as a road map for himself and others.

“Two of our Emmy-winning filmmakers are directors with disabilities. When editors hire journalists with disabilities and accommodate them, it leads to deeper and more sensitive coverage. So I’m especially proud of these short films, and those who made them,” said Adam Ellick, executive director of Opinion Video and Op-Docs.

Opinion Video was also awarded the top prize for Outstanding News Discussion & Analysis: Editorial and Opinion for “The Taliban Promised Them Amnesty. Then They Executed Them.” A product of a seven-month investigation by the team, this video reveals that nearly 500 former government officials and members of the Afghan security forces were killed or forcibly disappeared during the Taliban’s first six months in power. Times Opinion built the most extensive database of revenge killings in Afghanistan to date using a variety of verification methods that included conducting forensic video research, confirming local news reports, collaborating with human rights organizations and interviewing survivors and family members.

The Times newsroom won for Outstanding Interactive Media with “How We Went Inside the Apocalyptic Worldview of ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight,’” an analysis of 1,150 episodes of the show, which revealed how Mr. Carlson pushed extremist ideas and conspiracy theories into households, five nights a week. The Times also won Outstanding Editing: News with “Caught on Camera, Traced by Phone: The Russian Military Unit That Killed Dozens in Bucha,” an eight-month visual investigation that identified the Russian regiment and commander behind one of the worst atrocities in Ukraine.

“This recognition is a testament to The New York Times’s commitment to holding power to account with innovative, groundbreaking visual journalism,” said Solana Pyne, Video director.
