The Times Receives 16 Emmy Nominations Across Opinion and News Reporting

The New York Times received News and Documentary Emmy nominations for work throughout the Opinion and News reports.

Three pieces from the Op-Docs series of short films received nominations: a portrait of the lawmaker that led the defense of gender equity in college sports, a celebration of coming of age in Indigenous society and an illumination of the journey faced by young adults with disabilities.

The Opinion Video team was recognized with six nominations for five works, including an immersive film about living with a stutter and a deeply reported investigation into the Taliban government’s regime of revenge killings in Afghanistan.

“I’m really proud of the range of stories produced by our small team of journalists and filmmakers,” said Adam Ellick, the executive director of Opinion Video and Op-Docs. “Using a variety of creative formats, we took on a series of difficult subjects: Afghanistan, disability rights, corporate hospital greed and post-Roe abortion. It’s exciting to be recognized by the Emmys with so many nominations.”

A gripping piece of live journalism, Andrew Ross Sorkin’s interview with Sam Bankman-Fried at the Dealbook Summit in the fall, was nominated in the Long Form Live Interview category.

Work also nominated from Newsroom team included three pieces of interactive journalism that envelop the reader and invite exploration into the topics of life-altering weather,  the worldview of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and uncertainty among Russian fighters in their invasion of Ukraine.

The video journalist Yousur Al-Hlou was nominated for Outstanding Emerging Journalist for her collective work across a number of projects throughout the past year, and an exhaustive visual investigation into the chilling actions of a Russian military unit in Ukraine was recognized in two categories.

“This recognition of both world-class video journalism and The Times’s unique approach to immersive, interactive visual storytelling speaks to the evolution that our news report has undergone,” said Solana Pyne, director for Video. “We are meeting our readers at their point of curiosity and taking new approaches to tell complex stories. I’m thrilled that our journalists are getting this acclaim.”
