- Call of Duty announces its Warzone Caldera including players’ progression and other online services would shut down in three months.
- Chainlink in response explains how NFTs could transform digital ownership in gaming with its ability to offer permanence.
A recent post by the Call of Duty team announced that Call of Duty®: Warzone™ Caldera would shut down by September 21, 2023. On the alleged date, players’ progression, inventories, and online services would expire. This will enable them to focus on future Call of Duty content which includes the current Warzone free-to-play experience. Also, there is a hint that the game is embracing Chainlink-powered NFTs as part of its decision to change its existing digital ownership. Chainlink (LINK) has in response to this announcement shared what the gaming industry stands to benefit when it takes advantage of NFTs.
According to the post, the ownership dynamics between the game publisher and players who purchase the in-game assets are usually not clear. As Call of Duty is shutting down its Warzone™ Caldera, there would be the ability to retain remnants of one’s digital history with NFTs as it offers digital permanence. However, Chainlink clarified that NFTs are not the solution to games shutting down. Instead, it could constantly remind both the developer and players that e-games can never be truly deleted. In fact, NFTs can offer more than ownership revolution to the gaming industry.
When players purchase in-game assets, the ownership dynamic between them and the game publisher is often unclear. Lots of times, players are simply renting the assets for an indeterminate period of time, with little to no guarantees the asset will be usable in the future. What NFT Games Stand to Benefit From Chainlink
In a blog post by Chainlink about how NFTs can address some of the problems existing in the gaming industry, it mentioned that players could have sovereign ownership of digital assets as they do with physical ones.
They are theirs to own, build upon, and trade in whichever way they see fit. And this kind of real ownership creates a new level of player immersion and engagement, as evidenced by the tendency for humans to collect physical items like rare coins, stamps, cards, and other memorabilia. Before NFTs, creating a digital collectible was impossible because the longevity of any item was ephemeral and uncertain. At any point, the server that owned the digital item could shut down and the collectible would no longer exist.
Another benefit is Interoperability and monetization. Games built on the same blockchain are connected. Players who purchase or earn in-game NFTs get access to open blockchain marketplaces to buy, sell, and trade their NFTs. Typical examples of these NFT Games are Gods Unchained, Dookey Dash, and Loot.
The benefits of Chainlink in games like Call of Duty include offering developers the capacity to leverage the power of blockchain technology to come up with an end-to-end experience to enhance existing games.
Chainlink also explains that it offers solutions to the current limitations of NFT Games which include NFT smart contracts unable to interface with data outside the blockchain. With this, Chainlink Functions can enable developers to connect with any API in a minute and enable the games to be built at a faster pace. With the issue of interoperability, The Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) which is in development could enable applications built on different blockchains to communicate with each other. The blockchains’ lack of a source of secure randomness is another problem that could be addressed by Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) according to the blog post. This is because VRF enables Web3 developers to easily access random numbers which can be independently verified by any user.
