The Video team won first place in Documentary News Reporting for “As Russia Pivots East, Ukrainians Ask: Are We Next?,” which captured life on the front lines in southeast Ukraine as war from Russia drew near.
In addition, Cesar Rodriguez won first place in the General News category for a photo of migrants crossing the Rio Grande, and video journalist Emily Rhyne won first for the Documentary Storyteller of the Year.
Dozens of photographers and photo editors were also recognized for their work with The Times. Finalists and Award of Excellence recipients were named in various categories, from Community Awareness to Online Storytelling to Newspaper Editing.
And in a new category for coverage of the war in Ukraine, Times photojournalists received the following honors:
- Laetitia Vançon was named a finalist in the War in Ukraine: Daily Life category for her documentation of life in Odesa during Russia’s invasion. She also won an Award of Excellence in the War in Ukraine: Picture Story category for this work.
- And in the War in Ukraine: News Singles category, David Guttenfelder and Lynsey Addario were each given an Award of Excellence. David was recognized for his photo of suicide drones, and Lynsey for her photo of a family killed while fleeing Irpin. Additionally, Daniel Berehulak was given Judges’ Special Recognition for his photo of a woman standing among the dead.
Also, the Video team won six other awards.
“All worked tirelessly this year, some putting their own lives at risk, to document so many important stories,” said Solana Pyne, Video director. “The sweep and scale of the work reflected in these awards demonstrate the impressive skill and dedication of Times video and photo journalists and editors.”
