Frog Coins are among the many items and consumables players can find in Super Mario RPG. Although these verdant coins are first brought to players’ attention after helping Mallow recover his from Croco, it’s possible that players may have already accumulated a few on their journey beforehand. These coins will allow players to get some incredibly helpful accessories, so it is important to stock up on as many as possible.
Where to Find Frog Coins
Frog Coins can be found all across Super Mario RPG. Players will most likely accumulate a good number from regular battles with enemies or from hidden treasure chests scattered throughout the world. The coins can also be earned as a reward through various minigames Mario can play. There is no set limit to the number of Frog Coins that exist, so players are able to gather as many as they wish.
Though nearly every minigame in Super Mario RPG rewards Mario with Frog Coins, the Midas River minigame that occurs after Kero Sewers is an excellent choice for farming Frog Coins early in the game. Players will find Frog Coins scattered along the river and within the various caves that dot the waterfall. Players are also able to trade in the regular gold coins collected during this minigame to earn more Frog Coins. This process can be repeated several times over to farm as many Frog Coins as the player wants.
Later on in the game, players may find that other minigames, such as the Paratroopa Cliff Scale, can be used to farm Frog Coins more efficiently. Frog Coins can also be farmed by performing several consecutive jumps on Wigglers or Shoguns in the overworld, though the timing can prove tricky.
What are Special Enemies
Players are also able to earn Frog Coins by defeating Special Enemies. On any difficulty, these enemies will occasionally appear in random overworld encounters as a tougher variant of the normal enemy (usually with higher HP and Defense). Defeating a Special Enemy in battle will always reward a Frog Coin as shown in the video above.
Where to Use Frog Coins
Within the game, there are two stores where Mario can spend his hard-earned Frog Coins. One is found earlier on in the game at Tadpole Pond and the other is found later on in Seaside Town.
At Tadpole Pond, the Frog Coin Emporium can be found immediately northwest after entering the area, next to the Juice Bar. There, Mario can speak with the left tadpole to browse the various battle items on sale for Frog Coins.
- (1 Frog Coin) Sleepy Bomb – Puts all enemies to sleep.
- (2 Frog Coins) Bracer – Raises an ally’s defense in battle.
- (2 Frog Coins) Energizer – Raises an ally’s attack power in battle.
- (5 Frog Coins) Party Bracer – Raises party’s defense in battle.
- (5 Frog Coins) Party Energizer – Raises party’s attack power in battle.
In Seaside Town, the Frog Coin Emporium can be found upstairs in a building toward the western end of town. The emporium is run by a student of the Frog Sage and similarly sells items for combat, in addition to powerful accessories for party members to wear.
- (10 Frog Coins) See Ya – Run from battles.
- (15 Frog Coins) Earlier Times – Use it to start a battle over.
- (22 Frog Coins) Exp. Booster – Doubles Exp. when equipped.
- (36 Frog Coins) Coin Trick – Doubles the coins won in battle.
- (50 Frog Coins) Flower Ring – Cuts FP use in half during battle.
It’s recommended that players save their coins to use on these accessories as they grant extraordinary benefits to the party. Beyond making purchases at these two emporiums, Frog Coins serve no other purpose.
