The Solana Foundation recently hosted the PlayGG event in San Diego, aiming to change the narrative surrounding NFTs and blockchain games. The two-day event showcased games building on Solana and sought to attract investors, the media, and local families to experience blockchain gaming without the emphasis on crypto or NFTs.
The event featured a variety of games such as Star Atlas, Aurory, and Alchemy: Battle for Ankhos and included professional gamers from the G2 Esports team. Unlike previous blockchain games, many of the games presented at PlayGG did not focus on NFTs or token rewards and did not require payment or cryptocurrency to play.
Solana Games General Manager Johnny Lee emphasized that the goal of the Solana Games initiative is not only to outperform other blockchain games but also to compete with traditional (“Web2”) titles. Lee highlighted the importance of providing unique and quality player experiences using blockchain technology.
To ensure support for promising games, Solana Gaming requires game developers to present a build of the game and allow their team to play it before offering any commercial support. Over 50 games were present at the PlayGG event, demonstrating the commitment to quality.
While acknowledging past issues, Lee expressed confidence in the strength of the Solana network and its ability to support games and transactions. He also mentioned the optimism surrounding the upcoming Firedancer validator client, which is expected to further stabilize the network.
Lee believes that when ready for public release, the games showcased at PlayGG have the potential to compete with mainstream games in similar genres. Solana Games is excited for the next stage of Web3 games and is committed to building a strong games ecosystem on the Solana network.
