Serena Williams’ husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian cited ‘generational trauma’ as the motivation behind his NFT and cryptocurrency investments, which has sparked a negative reaction from tennis fans.
In an interview with Forbes magazine on February 21, Alexis Ohanian pointed to the ‘generational trauma’ from the seizure of his ancestor’s assets during the Armenian genocide as the reason behind his continued support for NFTs. The magazine reshared an excerpt from his interview on Twitter on Monday (April 3).
“Alexis Ohanian’s ancestors perished during the Armenian genocide and had their assets seized. That generational trauma is a big reason why he’s betting heavily on NFTs and future social networks, despite crypto’s chilly winter storm,” Forbes tweeted.
Tennis fans were shocked by the sentiments expressed by Ohanian. A few fans pointed out the logical fallacy in the 39-year-old’s argument by joking about their own ‘generational trauma.’
“My ancestors were murdered by the Mongols during the Yuan dynasty. That’s why I’ve decided to invest all my savings into a Mongolian BBQ restaurant and reappropriate Genghis Khan’s legacy for my own amusement, despite all of my haters saying Mongolian BBQ is Taiwanese stir-fry,” one user commented.
“My ancestors were killed in the holocaust and that’s why i’m here today to talk to you about recruiting more members to your downline,” another fan tweeted.
One fan chimed in to state that Ohanian’s stement was offensive to everybody.
“Trying to decide who this is most offensive to and ending up on everybody ever,” the fan wrote.
