Obols are collectibles hidden throughout The Devil in Me, so here’s a little help with what they are, where to find them, and how to spend them.
There are a great number of items to collect in The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me. Each Dark Pictures game comes with a handful of collectible clues for the game’s story, but in The Devil in Me, SuperMassive introduced fans to a new currency: obols.
The Curator tasks you with finding them throughout the story, and most scenes from both the Theatrical and Curator’s Cuts will have coins to locate as you progress. We’ve found each obol from The Devil in Me, and below, we’ll detail how you can get them all as well.
Obols And Dioramas
A new currency in The Devil in Me, you’re introduced to obols the first time you check in with The Curator when you speak to him after finishing The World’s Fair Hotel introductory scene. He tells you that they were used “to pay the ferryman,” referring to Charon, the ferryman who took departed souls across the River Styx and into the afterlife in Greek mythology.
Throughout The Devil in Me, you can find obols in the following four denominations. Each coin will have dots along the top that tell you their value, but each will have a symbol on it as well.
- One-obol pieces have a dog.
- Two-obol pieces have a boat.
- Five-obol pieces have a skull.
- Ten-obol pieces have a bird.
In The Devil in Me, obols can be traded in with The Curator in exchange for dioramas. These figurines will showcase either characters or events from the game.
However, they must be experienced naturally in the game before becoming unlocked in the Special Features menu.
If a scene where a diorama unlocks plays out differently for you, you will not unlock the diorama. For example, one of the dioramas is of Jamie and Erin during the Guests scene, and it’s unlocked when the two kiss.
However, if you kept their relationship platonic, then this diorama will not unlock.
We currently don’t know how obols will impact The Dark Pictures Anthology as a whole as we move into season two when the next game releases, but The Curator definitely seems interested in them.
All Obol Locations
We’ve found 28 obols during our playthroughs of The Devil in Me. There’s an achievement/trophy for collecting 200 of them, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.
In order to find each coin, you’ll need to play through both the Theatrical and Curator’s Cuts, as each has at least one obol that isn’t accessible in the other version due to scene variations.
Additionally, some scenes may be played by more than one character depending on who’s alive at the time, but there are times when only one of the possible player characters can locate the obol for the scene.
